On the Limits of Language

I. The Problem of Red

When I say “red,” what do you see?

A stop sign? Blood? A memory of your childhood tricycle? Whatever it is, I can guarantee it doesn’t match mine. Not in hue, not in temperature, not in emotional resonance. And yet we’re both using the same word.

Our brains are transmitting compressed packets of experience using crude, shared symbols. The result is often good enough for ordering lunch or feigned empathy. But for transmitting complex meaning, structural truth, experience beneath intent, language often falls flat.

This not a philosophical gripe, but an architectural flaw in how we talk to one another. This is what every frustrated designer, director, and shy 6-year-old has felt forever but can’t articulate: the gap between what I feel and what you hear.

II. Language as High-Entropy Compression

Language works the way MP3s do: it chops up rich, nuanced, high-frequency data and spits out a file small enough to share. What we lose is fidelity.

Take a word like “good.” It means everything and nothing. It means “sufficient,” “pleasing,” “morally acceptable,” “high quality,” or just “not awful.” The entropy is astronomical. You’d get a more precise signal smacking someone over the head with a painting.

This is entropy in its purest communicative sense: the gap between what is sent and what is received. That gap is noise and language is drowning in it.

III. Pre-Linguistic Signal

So what happens when we bypass the talking?

Music. Architecture. Design. Painting. These are not just art, they are low-entropy communication systems and in many cases actually precede language.

They transmit feeling, logic, contrast, rhythm. They don’t ask you to translate; they ask you to experience. A piece of music doesn’t tell you how it feels. It is the feeling. A cathedral doesn’t explain reverence; it applies pressure to your lungs and posture.

This is meaning beneath semantics, signal without sentence.

IV. The Shape of Meaning

Real meaning lives in structure.

Bach doesn’t explain God. He invokes the divine through counterpoint. I.M. Pei doesn’t describe clarity, he constructs it from glass and steel. Games don’t tell you about agency, they hand you a controller and a world and react to what you do.

When you experience these forms, what you receive isn’t data. It’s pattern. And it feels truer than any sentence could manage. Why? Because patterns are resistant to noise. You can mangle a note or two, but the motif survives.

A vending machine that learns to fear you is worth a thousand dialog trees.

V. Beyond Language: A Framework for Pre-Semantic Signal

This is by no means an indictment of language. It’s just an acknowledgment of its limits.

We don’t need to replace language, but we do need a better understanding of its underlying strata. There are entire layers of communicative architecture based on pattern, rhythm, structure, and curvature. Leitmotif as psychological fingerprint, game mechanics as social commentary, spatial design as emotional calibration.

Leitmotif in Star Wars tell you what a character means before they speak. The spatial logic of a poorly-designed hallway can cause anxiety without a single word.

It’s not expression but rather compression and transmission without distortion. Information whose meaning survives the journey.

VI. The Cultural Noise Floor

Right now, modern discourse is drowning in its own entropy. Social media, news cycles, and outrage economies are built on feedback loops of recursive language; all symbols, no signal.

We don’t solve that with more eloquence or more content. We solve it with better design. With new architectures of intent. With systems that say more than their components. With signal that doesn’t ask for interpretation because it already lives in your bones.

VII. Conclusion: Say Less, Mean More

I submit to you that the “Old lie” isn’t just the one Owen wrote about. The oldest and greatest lie of language is that it is our highest form of communication. It isn’t. It’s just the loudest.

The power of pre-semantic signal isn’t that it bypasses language. It’s that it bypasses interpretation and goes straight to recognition. Pattern in time, space, and motion are the early alphabets of the pre-semantic. They say things we don’t have words for because they are the thing itself. A pattern isn’t a sentence, it’s an echo. And the body knows how to respond. You don’t read symmetry. You feel it.

So, the next time you struggle to bridge the gap between what you feel and what they hear: Say less, mean more.
